Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
