Following my relationship ended, I believed vacations as a single parent could be easy. I soon realized they were often outrageously expensive, or seemed exclusively suitable for “conventional” households, or else were far too cheap that I came back more knackered than before I started.
My first attempt, tenting with friends, went well until the moment came to pack up our shelter. Four hours of struggling with it in the heat afterward, I developed a dislike for the outdoors. Next, an adventurous holiday for single-parent households. Rappelling and exploring caves were fantastic, but resting in a bunk bed ruined my spine. We tried a low-cost package in Tenerife, but the crowds of nuclear families were overwhelming, and poolside conversations with other women died down because I didn’t come with a handy partner for their own spouses to talk to. A trip to Majorca with a friend and her children was brilliant, but the expense was eye-watering.
Later, the previous fall, an acquaintance inquired if we’d look after her pets in Devon as she attended to a wedding. For one tranquil weekend, we strolled on the beach, and settled near the fireplace at night. That led to pet-sitting for her friend in Dorset, which proceeded well. Encouraged, I paid an yearly £99 membership to join a pet-sitting platform, where, in exchange for caring for individuals' pets, you reside in their homes without cost. Within a few days, I’d arranged a ten-day house-sit within the county, caring for a retriever called Buzz while the proprietors were abroad.
Our daily walks provided the opportunity to explore breathtaking nature spots.
This marked our first sit for strangers, but any nerves vanished the moment we reached the beautiful spacious house and encountered the calm Buzz, who lived for tummy rubs. Each day's canine strolls offered us the opportunity to venture into magnificent nature spots, and, after we came back, we could relax outdoors for important discussions about our preferred “Ghosts” characters in the television series. There were no pricey tourist traps to wander around – instead, we browsed bookstores, indulged to manicures, and embarked on paddling excursions. I experienced lighter and more joyful than ever for a long time, and noticed the connection with my daughter Polly strengthen every day. I’m not afraid to admit that I cried from joy. Things felt achievable again.
Pet-sitting may not be suitable for all. Certain individuals want zero duties during vacations apart from choosing their upcoming cocktail, aren’t into dogs or cats, or perhaps find it strange regarding staying in a someone else’s bed, emptying the dishwasher, and taking out the trash. However the gentle pace of ordinary living, with work stripped out and fresh locations to explore, suits me for me.
This prevents myself from slipping into complete inactivity, which leaves me feeling twitchy and oddly hollow. And, financially, house-sitting acts as a lifeline for a single parent. A 10-day break in a comparable property within the identical area we visited could cost me about ÂŁ2,500 on Airbnb.
Regarding residing in a stranger’s home, I found it nourishing. Even though pet-sitting represents a transaction, it’s also an expression of faith among strangers and animals, which has brought out the finest version of me – my calm, caring and measured aspect, overflowing with appreciation for the people and locations we encounter. I’ve already scheduled another four days off, looking after a sighthound within verdant Surrey, and, in the coming year, I’d like to attempt house-sitting abroad. Thanks to a touch of innovative planning, we can experience the world from the comfort of home – it just happens to be someone else’s.
